The DhyanYog Society run AnandVidyalaya Study Centre at Bangalore was set up in September 2011. Free tuition is provided to under privileged students from classes 1 to 10 everyday for around 4 hours. There are 2 paid teachers and several DYS volunteers who teach at the Centre.
When we were looking at setting up schools in Bangalore, our research showed that though majority of the children were going to school, the quality of education was very poor.Hence, it was decided to, set up study centres to provide quality education. We were proved right as even the middle school students coming to us did not even know the basics.
The study centre started with just 15 students and the number quickly rose and the centre had to be moved to a bigger location to accommodate the rising number. Apart from providing tuition, DYS helps the students in more ways than one to ensure that they live qualitatively fulfilling lives. Eye camps are organised regularly and students with eye problems are provided spectacles and helped with further treatment,if needed.
Educational and fun trips to museums and parks are also organised at regular intervals. Birthdays and festivals are celebrated with equal vigour. Light snacks or fruits are also given everyday.
On Bengali New Year day, the Sarjapur Outer Ring Road Bengali Association (SORRBA) distributed bags, note books and stationery to the students. It was followed by a song and dance event.
There are plans of opening many such Study Centres across Bangalore.
